Railway Sector Launches Pilot High-Speed Rail Pet Transport Service

Starting April 8, the railway sector has initiated a pilot pet transport service on selected trains of the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway, featuring "isolated transportation, separation of owners and pets, and dedicated caretaking." The 12306 platform has simultaneously introduced a "Pet Transport" function, allowing passengers to book online at least two days in advance. Approved applicants may transport one domesticated cat or dog per trip, provided the pet is in good health, weighs no more than 15 kg, and has a shoulder height under 40 cm.

There are many key features of the "isolated transportation, separation of owners and pets, and dedicated caretaking" service. First, specialized equipment for isolated transport. Custom-designed high-speed rail pet carriers with air circulation, oxygen/temperature/humidity monitoring, noise reduction and odor control are deployed. Pets remain securely housed in these carriers, which are stored in dedicated express storage compartments onboard, preventing fur, odors or noise from affecting passengers. Second, dedicated storage with owner-pet separation. Each train allocates one express storage compartment, typically at one end of a middle carriage, exclusively for pet carriers, physically separated from passenger areas. Staff do not open carriers during transit to ensure environmental hygiene and pet safety. Third, professional monitoring and care. Staff monitor pets via the carriers' built-in systems and conduct inspections at intervals lower than 2 hours. Water may be replenished as needed, with no feeding permitted, and owners cannot visit pets during transit. Post-transport, carriers undergo immediate disinfection, followed by full compartment sanitization upon the train's arrival.
